Quick Class: How Dynamic Seating Helps Maintain Wheelchair Posture
Course Overview
Maintaining optimal posture in a wheelchair seating system can be challenging for clients who experience active extension, dystonia, or other large and forceful movements. In this Seating Dynamics Quick Class, Michelle Lange, OTR/L, ATP/SMS, explains how these movements can cause a client to lose alignment with their seating support surfaces. Learn how dynamic seating can absorb and diffuse forces, reduce leverage, and allow movement while helping the client return to their desired starting position. This approach may reduce the frequency of repositioning while supporting improved postural alignment within the seating system.
Course Objectives
After viewing this Quick Class, participants will be able to:
• Identify common factors that can contribute to loss of position within a wheelchair seating system.
• Explain how hip, lower extremity, and neck extension can affect pelvic, trunk, and head alignment.
• Describe how force and leverage can contribute to posterior pelvic tilt and other changes in seated posture.
• Explain how dynamic seating components absorb and diffuse forces generated by active extension or forceful movement.
• Describe how dynamic seating can reduce leverage against footplates and other support surfaces.
• Explain how allowing controlled movement can help a client return to their starting position.
• Recognize how dynamic seating may reduce the need for frequent caregiver-assisted repositioning.
• Understand how traditional postural supports and dynamic seating may be used together for appropriate clients.
Great short course Michelle. Always enjoy your presentations.
Thanks Elaine! I appreciate it, Michelle
