Quick Class: What is Dynamic Seating?
Course Overview
Dynamic seating allows movement within a wheelchair seating system or frame in response to forces generated by the user. In this Quick Class, Michelle Lange explains the recognized definition of dynamic seating and how dynamic backs, footrests, and head support hardware are designed to accommodate movement. The course also explores how dynamic components such as elastomers, springs, and hydraulics absorb force and return stored energy to help the user return toward their starting position. Viewers will also learn why proper alignment of pivot points is essential for maintaining posture and position during movement.
Course Objectives
After completing this Quick Class, viewers will be able to:
• Define dynamic seating using the recognized RESNA terminology.
• Explain how movement can occur within the wheelchair seating system or frame.
• Identify common types of dynamic seating, including dynamic backs, dynamic footrests, and dynamic head support hardware.
• Distinguish between intentional and unintentional forces that may activate dynamic seating.
• Describe how elastomers, springs, and hydraulic components absorb force and return stored energy.
• Explain why returning the client to a starting position is an important function of dynamic seating.
• Understand how proper alignment of wheelchair pivot points with the body's natural joint movement can help maintain posture and positioning.
