Armrest Style and the Dynamic Rocker Back Interface
Michelle L. Lange, OTR/L, ATP/SMS
I work primarily with kids and their wheelchair frames are on the small side. This can be an issue when ordering a Dynamic Rocker Back interface (DRBi), as there is little ‘real estate’ on the frame.
This is particularly relevant to armrests. Some armrests attach to the back canes, such as height adjustable, flip-back, cantilever style. This mounting hardware takes up space on the back canes. On many wheelchair frames, particularly pediatric frames, there is simply not enough space for both an armrest which mounts on the back cane and the Dynamic Rocker Back interface which also mounts in this area. Or, if there is enough room, the armrests end up being mounted too high for the client.
The DRBi takes up 6-8” of the back cane height. Mounting the armrest on the back canes above the DRBi will result in the armrests being too high (at least 12” above the seat rail). In this case, we recommend ordering a seat rail mounted armrest instead.

Dual post style with height adjustment and armpad
Single or dual post armrests attach to the seat rail. Real estate may be limited in this area, as well, on very small frames. These are often height adjustable and available with desk or full-length pads. A single post option is more likely to fit on a smaller frame.
