FAQ: Does Installing a DRBi void the wheelchair manufacturer’s warranty? Part two: non-OEM

When installing a Dynamic Rocker Back interface (DRBi) on a manual or power wheelchair, the back canes must be cut to accommodate the height of the dynamic hardware. A common concern from suppliers is whether or not this voids the warranty on the wheelchair frame. It all depends on the manufacturer. In this blog, we will address how this is handled by non-OEM manufacturers who do not include the DRBi on their order forms.

When the DRBi is retrofitted to a new or existing PDG Mobility wheelchair, the DRBi does not void the manufacturer’s warranty, even if the back canes are cut to length as a part of installation.

Ki Mobility (operating subsidiary of Etac)

When the DRBi is retrofitted to an existing Ki Mobility wheelchair, the DRBi does not void the manufacturer’s warranty. However, if the back posts are modified (cut to length as a part of installation), the warranty will no longer cover the actual back posts. If new back posts are ordered from Ki Mobility at the required length, the warranty is not voided on this item.

Motion Composites

Per Motion Composites, modifications required to a Motion Composites wheelchair to install the DRBi will only void the warranty of the modified aluminum back canes. The following wheelchair models are compatible: Helio A6, Helio A7, and Move. The following back canes are approved in combination with these models: BC01, BC11, BC12, or BC58 (Helio A6 or A7) or BC01 (Move).

Permobil

When the DRBi is retrofitted to a new or existing Permobil wheelchair, the DRBi does not void the manufacturer’s warranty. However, if the back posts are modified (cut to length as a part of installation), the warranty will no longer cover the actual back posts.

Quantum Rehab

When the DRBi is retrofitted to a new or existing Quantum Rehab wheelchair, the DRBi does not void the manufacturer’s warranty. However, if the back posts are modified (cut to length as a part of installation), the warranty coverage is not effected on electronics and motors.

Sunrise Medical

We are currently working with Sunrise Medical to clarify warranty implications and will update this blog when we have further information.

As the DRBi is designed to prevent breakage of the back canes, warranty of the back canes themselves should not be an issue. It is important to share with consumers and their caregivers how use of Dynamic Seating impacts frame warranties.
