Dear CMS…a consumer’s perspective about the Dynamic Back Fee Schedule
Michelle L. Lange, OTR/L, ATP/SMS
I had the privilege to first speak with Jacqueline in 2021. In 2022, CMS published a proposed fee schedule for Dynamic Backs and Jacqueline answered the call to provide her comments on this important topic. Unfortunately, CMS decided not to receive comments right before a public meeting on this topic, stating that a final decision had already been made. We have been periodically sharing comments that were submitted so these voices can be heard.
“Limiting financial access to dynamic seating systems is denying a person the freedom to move their body freely without feeling restricted or confined. Instead of aggravating and limiting movement of the body during hypertonic muscle tone fluctuations, it (dynamic seating) relaxes muscle contraction and releases muscle tone and tension. When the body is constantly contracting, this results in more pain for the wheelchair user and more broken wheelchair parts for those who don’t use dynamic seating systems compared to those that do use dynamic seating systems. When you deny people with mobility restrictions the right to access something that literally gives them freedom to navigate the world and increase functionality over all, It is basically like telling someone they are better off with two broken legs. No one deserves to live like that. CMS, please continue to provide funding for dynamic seating systems and wheelchairs overall.
Thank you for letting me share.”
